The kids phone that keeps social media out

Your child may be ready for a phone. That doesn’t mean they’re ready for the pressure, comparison, and endless scrolling that come with social media.

Troomi lets them call, text, and stay close to the people they love, while you decide what comes next. Social media apps stay locked, social media sites are blocked by default, and every change goes through you first.

Why choose a phone with no social media?

A first phone should help kids stay close to the people who matter, without the pressure to post, scroll and compare. Keeping them off social media while they’re young gives them a chance to build healthy tech habits and the self-confidence that grows when they aren’t measuring themselves against likes, filters and highlight reels.

In a 2025 Pew Research Center survey, nearly half of U.S. teens (48%) said social media has a mostly negative effect on people their age, up from 32% in 2022. Confidence is part of that picture, especially for girls. Teen girls were twice as likely as boys to say social media hurts their confidence (20% vs. 10%), and 34% of girls said it makes them feel worse about their own lives.

Numbers like these are why many families choose to wait. A phone without social media gives you time to see how your child handles their first steps online, so when the time comes to say yes, you’ll know they’re ready.

How Troomi blocks social media

Troomi blocks social media in both places kids usually find it: the app store and the web browser. Your child starts with no social media at all, and nothing changes until you decide they’re ready.

Social media websites blocked by default.

Social media sites are blocked in the Troomi Smart Browser from day one. If you decide your child is ready for a particular site, you can approve it and monitor time spent there in the Troomi Parent Portal. For known social media sites, parents see a warning about the risks so every yes is an informed one.

Social media apps stay blocked.

Social media apps are on Troomi’s block list, so they can’t be approved in the Troomi App Store or installed on your child’s phone, even by a parent. There’s no workaround and no “just this once.”

“For years, we searched for a phone that met our unique needs and circumstances. Troomi has finally met that challenge.

The features we needed that we found with Troomi:

1) ability to have only certain contacts on the phone that could be called and texted,
2) no access to the internet or social media,
3) location monitoring,
4) ability to add appropriate and safe apps,
5) and finally, great customer support…”

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Social media apps are blocked on every Troomi phone, and social media websites are blocked by default in the Troomi Smart Browser. If you decide to approve a social media website, you can see how much time your child spends on it in the Parent Portal once the Smart Browser dashboards are turned on.

Apps Troomi has blocked can’t be installed, even with a parent’s approval. When you browse the full Google Play Store in the Parent Portal, blocked apps appear with a lock icon, so you’ll always know which ones aren’t available. That gives your family a firm line, and nobody has to have the “just this once” debate.

Apps are blocked automatically if they’re rated Mature 17+ or Adults Only 18+, or if they’re flagged for content like explicit language or graphic violence. Social media platforms, meaning apps built around public profiles, content sharing, and public messaging with strangers, are blocked too. Our team also reviews apps by hand and blocks ones that pass the automatic checks but are inappropriate for kids.

Not by default. Social media websites are blocked in the Troomi Smart Browser from day one, and turning on other categories like News or Entertainment doesn’t open them up. If you decide your child is ready for a particular site, you can approve it in the Parent Portal, one site at a time. Approving one site doesn’t approve any others. You can also see which sites your child visits, how long they spend on each, and which sites were blocked, and kids can’t delete or hide their browsing history. To see this activity, turn on the Smart Browser dashboards in the Parent Portal.

Yes. You can approve individual social media websites in the Parent Portal when you feel your child is ready. For known social media sites, Troomi first shows you a warning with the site’s risk level so you can make an informed choice, and you’ll need to acknowledge it before the approval goes through. Social media apps work differently: they stay blocked and can’t be approved.

Activity appears in the Parent Portal as your child’s phone syncs, so it stays reasonably current but isn’t instant. Ongoing monitoring will give you the clearest view of your child’s browsing patterns.

A first phone should help kids stay connected with the people who matter, without the pressure to post, scroll, and compare. A phone without social media lets your child build healthy tech habits at their own pace, and gives your whole family room to decide together when they’re ready for more.
