How to Turn on Troomi’s Content Filtering Feature

Welcome to the Troomi quick guide for content filtering. In this post, we’ll review how to set your content filtering settings, view content, and flag, blur, or block content so your child is set up for success on their digital journey. As parents, ensuring a safe online environment for our children is a top priority. With technology playing such a significant role in their lives, it’s more important than ever to have tools that help us manage what they can access.

Step 1: Navigate to the Parent Portal

First, open your Parent Portal. You can access the portal by entering your credentials on the Troomi website. Along the bottom of the screen, select Settings and then Content Filtering. Familiarizing yourself with the layout of the portal will make navigating through the options much smoother.

Step 2: Turn On Content Filtering

Content filtering is turned “off” by default on all Troomi devices. To enable it:

  1. Toggle the settings On. This will activate the filtering system across all managed devices linked to your account.
  2. Read and accept the terms and conditions. This step is essential as it informs you of the guidelines and responsibilities involved in using content filtering. Make sure you understand how it affects your child’s access to content.

Step 3: Adjust Filtering Settings

You can now adjust the settings to suit your child’s needs and maturity level. These settings determine if any content (both sent and received) is flagged, blocked, blurred, or delivered.

  • Toggle settings on or off: Allow or prevent content filtering based on the categories you deem necessary.
  • Add words or emojis to your managed list: Customize the filtering by entering specific terms or symbols that you want to be flagged or blocked. This ensures more control over the types of communication your child can engage in.
  • Set sliders for your preferred filtering strength: Adjust sliders that correspond to various content categories, such as violence, adult content, and substance use. Consider discussing these categories with your child to ensure upper limits are understood.

Click the ‘i’ next to each preference setting to read more about its function. This feature will provide you valuable insights into how each option operates, allowing you to make informed decisions.

Step 4: View Content

To view content, go to the homepage of the Parent Portal. Here you’ll see:

  • An overview of total messages: Get a snapshot of how many messages have been sent and received on your child’s device.
  • Current content filtering settings: Review the active filtering choices to confirm they align with your intentions.
  • Blocked messages: Check any messages that have been intercepted by the content filter, providing an insight into what content is deemed inappropriate.
  • Most frequent senders: Identify who your child communicates with most often, helping to ensure they are connecting with trusted individuals.

Click ‘View’ at the bottom of the messaging dashboard. This allows you to view texts on the Troomi device as if you’re looking at your child’s phone. You’ll be able to monitor their interactions more closely, maintaining an open dialogue about who they’re communicating with.

Step 5: Real-Time Updates

You can change settings at any time in the Parent Portal for real-time updates. This ensures you can always adjust the content filtering as needed. Should you discover new concerns or changes in your child’s online behavior, revisit these settings and reconsider your approach to maintaining a safe environment. Regularly updating your filtering preferences is a key part of responding to the evolving digital landscape.
