February is Black History Month! First implemented in 1925 to raise awareness of African American contributions to civilization, the week-long event became a month-long celebration in 1976.
That year, President Gerald R. Ford said to Americans, “Seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
